I have formulated the following moral rules based on principles of secularism, rationality, empathy, civil coexistence, and social responsibility, in order to promote a cooperative, peaceful, open society that respects diversity.
These rules should not be applied rigidly, but should be adapted with wisdom and discernment, taking into account the specific context of each situation.
- RECIPROCITY – Do not do to others what you would not want done to you Seek to understand the needs, desires, concerns, and emotions of others, and take them into account in social interactions.
- RESPECT – Respect the dignity, diversity, and universal rights of every person Respect every individual regardless of ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, opinions, origins, abilities, health, beauty, wealth, etc. Recognize that all are equal before the law and have the same rights. Acknowledge everyone’s right to have ideas, opinions, feelings, interests, tastes, and behaviors different from those of the majority (as long as they do not harm others), and to express them freely.
- SINCERITY – Be honest, sincere, and clear Seek and defend the truth against falsehoods, admit the uncertainty and incompleteness of opinions, and base your decisions on evidence rather than prejudice. Recognize that truth is often subjective, and respect those who cannot bear truths different from their own. Be authentic, meaning consistent between your values, words, and actions. Speak sincerely and clearly. Be ready to acknowledge your mistakes and self-deceptions.
- SOLIDARITY – Stand in solidarity with those in need of help Help those in need, in proportion to your means. Support wealth redistribution policies. Act to protect the vulnerable, the innocent, and the victims of injustice, even when you have no direct interest.
- NON-HARM – Do not harm others Do not harm others and do not use violence (physical, verbal, or psychological) against anyone (person or animal) without justifiable reasons. Do not steal, deceive, or defraud. Faithfully keep promises made and commitments undertaken. Respect private property and people’s privacy. Resolve conflicts through dialogue and constructive negotiation rather than by force.
- RESPONSIBILITY – Be accountable for the consequences of your actions and your private and political choices Evaluate the consequences of your past and future choices and actions for yourself and others, and repair or compensate for any damage. Do not blame others for your mistakes or failures. Participate in the political decisions of your community as much as possible, assessing their consequences for all. Support political choices that favor civil progress, scientific and humanistic research, and the common good over your personal benefit.
- JUSTICE – Be fair and equitable Respect the principle of reciprocity and fairness between giving and receiving. Be grateful to those who have been generous to you and seek to repay them. Respect the laws and rules of the society in which you live, provided they do not conflict with universal moral principles. Do not accuse anyone without evidence. Do not take advantage of those in need to exploit them. Be ready to forgive those who regret having harmed you.
- LOYALTY – Seek to reconcile competition with cooperation Ensure that competition is fair, sincere, not misleading, and does not harm cooperation.
- ENVIRONMENT – Respect the environment and public goods Leave the environment in a better state than you found it.
- IMPROVEMENT – Strive for the improvement of yourself, society, and the environment through study, teaching, critical thinking, and exemplary behavior.
